Servals
Leptailarus Serval
Inhabiting mainly the mid and southern grassy
region of Africa, this Exotic mid sized cat seems to be a popular choice
for private owners. The Serval has a yellow, to sandy brown
colored coat with black markings, and it's the variations in these
markings that have distinguished up to fourteen subspecies of the
cat. Servals have very little, dainty heads sporting a pair of
oversized ears. Known to have extraordinarily good hearing a
Serval can pick up the ultrasonic high frequencies emitted by
rodents, their prey of choice. Once they have picked up the sound,
they can easily spot their prey since those long legs of theirs
allows them to see just over the top of the grass. Leaping
straight up into the air and pouncing on the rodent, either a mole
rat, a ground squirrel or maybe a frog, the Serval easily catches
a meal. These Exotic Cats also eat birds and are known to be capable of leaping
ten feet straight into the air, clasping the bird in their
little paws or knocking them to the ground.
The Serval is not known for attacking anything
near the their same size, such as sheep or other livestock,
therefore they are able to coexist with humans in the farmland
areas of Africa. They have been, however, hunted for their
attractive coat and in some areas for their meat. They are now
protected in most areas and are listed as "Threatened."
"The Serval" what can I say! To any that know
me, know I have had a "LOVE AFFAIR" with these gorgeous creatures
for twenty plus years.
